Kick Off 3

aka: Kick Off 3: Out of This World
Moby ID: 12831
DOS Specs

Description

The third entry in the Kick Off series is the first that offers an isometric view instead of the old top-down view. In the game, there are four competitions (World Cup Finals, League, Knock Out Cup and the challenge). There are several options for game speed and ball control to suit both novice and skilled gamers. Each of the 32 teams in the game has a distinct style of play, ensuring that no two games are alike. Each team also has "key players", such as Liberos and Wingers, who play a pivotal role in how that team plays. Kick Off 3 offers two styles of play: Arcade and Simulation. The difference is that in the Arcade mode you can switch off rules to focus purely on reflexes.

The Good
The graphics were pretty good, and it featured real teams and players, unlike Kick Off 2.

The Bad
The controls were horrible with a standard one button joystick - you couldn't pass accurately, and dribbling was comparatively sluggish, so 'hit and hope' was the only option. Why not include a keyboard option? With 2 button controllers, passing was too easy, and didn't require much skill.

Comparisons with the previous Kick Offs basically go out of the window - the viewpoint is different and the control system has changed. The whole thing smacks of cash-in.

The Bottom Line
Apparently, Steve Screech has disowned this game ot the point where he is ashamed to mention it. Having played it, I'm not surprised. A shameless cash-in from a desperate company. Nothing about the game was suited to the Amiga, and no effort was made to make it suitable.
