His Majesty's Ship Impetuous
- His Majesty's Ship Impetuous (2011 on Browser)
Description
This game puts the player in the captain's chair of a ship of the British naval fleet circa the Napoleonic wars, strongly evoking the period immortalized in C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower novels. The player is presented with nautical, battle and regimental situations demanding executive decisions and then the player makes those decisions by typing them in and hoping that the rudimentary Eliza-like text analyser understood their intention.
A version of the game for the Zenith Z89 / Heathkit H89 was published in 1982 by EvryWare. There is also an unofficial browser remake .

The Good
Easy going story, with interesting plot & characters. Simple to pick up and play. Each decision you make can make changes in the story, & how successful you are, & what the crew thinks of you. Different endings.
The Bad
Limited amount of decisions made in game. Not being able to see previous prose, which can have effect if you forgot what is being said.
The Bottom Line
This is a very early Interactive Fiction (IF) type of game in the time of Horatio Hornblower & the war against France. Simpler than an adventure, but makes up for that with nice storyline. Abrupt ending, due to version played I expect, rather than game. Although not finished I expect I had seen most of the plot, & although you can keep playing afresh for new endings, after awhile they would get boring. If you like IF you will probably like to play this in an historical sense, & is worth a playthrough.

Trivia
TRS-80 Model II
A TRS-80 Model II version of His Majesty's Ship Impetuous was advertised on contemporary catalogs (Distributed on a floppy disk compilation featuring three more interactive fiction games by Adventure International). The Model II was an expensive machine, targeted to businesses and as such, games for it weren't commonplace.
