OutRunners
Description
OutRunners is a sequel to the classic arcade racer OutRun. It puts you behind the wheel of 8 different race cars with the aim being coming up first on a world-wide cross-country racing tournament.
As mentioned you get to select from 8 differently tuned cars, each with different handling and speed specs. and then ride out in hopes of getting the trophy. At the end of each stage you get to select between different branching routes that determine what your next stage will be, and thus the different routes you take to the end game determine what ending you get (if you manage to beat the other players).
OutRunners places a big emphasis on competitive gameplay as you are always racing against another car, be it an AI or human-controlled one in a perpetual split-screen multiplayer mode.

Trivia
Arcade version
The arcade original features up to 8 simultaneous racers by linking four 2-seater cabinets.
Mega Drive version
The Mega Drive version shares more or less nothing with its coin-op counterpart except the name and a restrictive two-player target market that means you get a horizontal split-screen even if you are playing in one-player mode. As well as the standard against-the-clock multiple routes game, there is a baffling "Original" mode in which you race the CPU on a single track with no branching. If you beat an opponent you win their car, if you fail you lose the car you were racing in and you keep going until you have got no cars left to race with. The mode ends after six levels giving no kind of score or ranking. The MD version has also a very crippled visuals and gameplay: almost non-existent draw distance feature, terrible collision detection and tracks which resemble the coin-op's in only a thematic sense.
