Disappointing sequel to the traditional 'coin-op'
The Good
Gauntlet II proved to be quite entertaining and sometimes challenging. The number of levels can keep a gamer busy for days, and the sudden change of levels that appear when you restart the game, adds more to the fun. Needless to say, it creates the same coin-op gameplay as its predecessor.
The Bad
It isn't the most original game of the pack. Despite the improved graphics, the simplicity of the levels still stands out. Small bugs, like occasional glittering when too many enemies are crowding the screen, aren't the worst: there are also some levels that seemed almost impossible to pass due to a malfunctioning teleporter. With your life-force slowly running out, this proves to be a very unwelcome sight.
One more detail: the number of enemies is seriously limited, which makes you to fight the same hordes over and over again.
The Bottom Line
Overall, it proved to be a disappointing sequel, and most parts seemed to be 'recycled' from the older version. Gauntlet II is a game for people who have some serious time to kill, nothing more.

Trivia
1001 Video Games
The Arcade version of Gauntlet II appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.
Cuntlet 2
A hex-edited, X-rated copy of the MS-DOS version of this game circulated underground under the name Cuntlet 2. As well as an explicit title screen (liberating the the valkyrie of her constrictive loincloth), enemy sprites were changed vulgar versions of themselves and "IT" (the communicable monster-attractor) was tastefully renamed "AIDS." Instead of leaving behind a key ring upon character death, instead in your wake is left a wet puddle. The 4 selectable gauntlet characters were also renamed.
Speech
Gauntlet II featured digitized sounds through the PC internal speaker. Some packages also included a Tandy SL / TL upgrade which took advantage of the digital sound capabilities of these computers (The SL / TL disk was also available from Mindscape if the package didn't include it. It seems inclusion of the enhanced sound disk was random)
