Quandary
It's fortunate, indeed, that this game made it into our reflections as it is one of the few games in our collection that is minus its box. It now shares a home with its younger sibling, Gabriel Knight II, so it tends to get overlooked when I rifle through the cupboard to find an 'old' game to review. It 'lost' its packaging, by the way, simply because it was so impractical, a fancy box with all acute angles that was impossible to store, and fell to pieces in no time. There's a lesson here somewhere for unsuspecting gameplayers. If you can possibly avoid it, don't purchase a game with odd shaped packaging because it's bound to come to grief.

Adventure Classic Gaming
Sierra On-Line makes a splash in the history of adventure gaming with the release of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Under the direction of writer Jane Jensen, the first title in Gabriel Knight series is the among the first adventure games that feature fictional stories based on real life legends or events. Thoroughly researched, Jensen has brought an unparalleled sense of authenticity that draws the player deep into the game. Backed by a first-rate production including a talented Hollywood caliber voice cast, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers sets a standard for all other developers on how an adventure game should be made.

So begins Sins of the Fathers — the first chapter in the Gabriel Knight series. Gabriel is a struggling author who has been trying to write his first novel for weeks, to little avail. And now his strange nightmares are getting steadily worse.

In conclusion, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is an excellent game. It is a great deal of fun, with excellent cut-scenes and backdrops, and stirring music. The writing is very good, providing excellent characterization and a strong story. The game does have a few minor problems, but their importance diminish in the face of the many strengths of Gabriel Knight.

I doubt there's been any adventure game that's made me more pissed than GK1. When I had my good ol' pentium 75 I tried at many occations to install and play this game, but for some reason which I do not know it would not work. The other day when I was checking out some of my oldies I decided I should give it a try on my new K7 650, and luckily it worked. One thing that sort of annoys me is when you have to change to 256 colors, it's probably because the windows version uses WinG libraries (the stuff that was used before directx) and it probably found out that it should piss off every single person who could afford the luxury of more colors. ANYWAYS, after having installed the game and watched a somewhat strange intro the game starts off in some strange office. As a matter of fact it looks a little like the room you start in in Indiana Jones 4, you know; brick walls, loads of books, strange artifacts and symbols, and a general mess.
