Description

At Wit's End is a freeware text adventure / interactive fiction game. It was developed using the T.A.D.S., the Text Adventure Development System, and runs in a browser window as it is written in HTML.

The game starts with the player taking the role of Jake Garrett a baseball player. The game starts with Jake, bat in hand, on the mound at Fenway Park facing the New York Yankees pitcher in the World Series. After facing the final ball of the match Jake is injured and is carted off to hospital. On the way there is an accident and in the course of trying to survive Jake stumbles onto some dastardly doings and the adventure gets underway.

The game is played entirely via the keyboard but a mouse can be used to access the menu bar when saving & loading the game.

This is my second attempt at IF. Though it was much easier than the first, I still relied heavily on external help. A big thanks go out to the
  • IF authors
  • beta testers
  • and folks at R*IF that helped me along the way.
I would like to start off by thanking
  • Michael J. Roberts (credited as Mike Roberts; not only for TADS and the incredible amount of work he's put into it but for making the source code available from some of his games)
  • I didn't rely on them as much as I did with Above and Beyond! but it's still a valuable resource to have in my back pocket.
  • Thanks again Mike
I would also like to thank
  • Stephen Granade (for making the source code to 'Arrival: Attack of the B-Movie Cliches' available.)
  • It was put to good use.
  • A huge thanks for also running the IF Comp -- super job.
A special thanks goes out to
  • Kevin Forchione (Not only did he provide some library routines from the ALT library [I didn't have the time to incorporate the entire ALT library - that is a shame] but helped out with some code problems along the way. Thank you very much Kevin)
A thanks also goes out to
A huge thanks goes out to
  • Philip Dearmore (credited as Phil Dearmore; author of Adventures of Helpfulman [and a couple of other games.])
  • He helped refine the puzzles and is responsible for the better play of the end puzzle scene. That's a good thing; my original ending was lacking. :)
The next group of folks contributed immeasurably to this game. I'll be the first one to admit it. I suck at writing. My strength lies in coding, and I can get by (sometimes!) with my imagination.
  • Michael Kinyon (Thanks Michael for coming through again. I don't know if you're just a glutton for punishment but I thought you would want nothing to do with me after I put you through hell in A&B. :})
  • Vincent Lynch (Thanks a bunch Vincent. Your reports are impeccable and have made this game more enjoyable to many more people. I also thought you would want a break from me after I put you through hell in A&B; I guess I was wrong.)
  • A big thanks for providing that last report; you probably saved many players a lot of aggravation by finding some killer bugs!
  • Dave Gatewood (Considering you almost gave up after getting frustrated in the opening scene you came through when I needed it the most. Your reports and recommended changes to the text were outstanding.) One day I'll be able to write like that too)
