Amiga Specs

Description official description

One of the numerous Doom style games for the Amiga in the mid 90s. Like Gloom, it was published by Guildhall Leisure, who gave the Amiga a lot of time in that era.

Fears took the approach of having full-screen, though relatively low-resolution, graphics. The level landscapes feature lots of stairways and lifts, giving it a pseudo-3D feel. The game is played across 30 levels, with a level designer also included. The one-player game has 3 difficulty levels, while multi-player action is available via a null-modem cable.

Trivia

Special features and add-ons

  • The game contains a built-in level designer and supports play via keyboard, mouse, joystick/joypad and null modem.
  • In December 1998 The Bomb released the first (and only) datadisk that contained three new levels. Data disk labeled as v1.1 can be download from Aminet for free.
  • CD32 version of the game is basically the same game as the floppy edition. However it contains improved, animated menu system and contains a hidden content: 3 scene demos and 3 music Amiga modules by people who were engaged in the game's creation. The demos are: "Real" (Complex), "A Maze In" (Digital) and "Casual" (Bomb). Music modules are named "Jimmy Jay", "Jimmy Jay 2" and "Post Modern"
  • There is also a third party application (available for free from Aminet) called "Fears Cheater" that allows the player to play every level of the game plus gives access to the hidden files described above.

Development

The game was based on a 3D engine used in a 1994 scene demo produced by Bomb group called "Motion: Origin 2". It was released at The Party 4 in Denmark.

Demo versions

  • Pre-release version of the game (so called shareware demo) was released in December 1994 and can be downloaded from Aminet. In comparison to the complete game, it was pretty basic in terms of gameplay. There were also some limitations - it ran in a small window and the walls were green without any textures.
  • Commercial demo of the game was released in June 1995 and also can be downloaded from Aminet.

Awards

  • Amiga Joker
    • Issue 02/1996 – #2 Best Action Game in 1995 (Readers' Vote)
