Scooby Doo, Where are You?

When the game begins, a famous inventor has disappeared in a haunted mansion. These spooky circumstances call for some serious snooping by the Mystery, Inc. team of Velma, Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby. The shady mastermind behind the mischief will no doubt be revealed, but not until he tries to rid the world of meddling kids.

Scooby Doo!: Night of 100 Frights is filled with plenty of authentic details from the Scooby Doo! cartoon series. Twenty monsters from the annals of Scooby-Doo! will try to scare Shaggy out of his baggy shirt--which, come to think of it, must be pretty darn easy. There is also an impressive cast of celeb voice talent from past episodes, including Don Knotts, Tim Conway, and Tim Curry.

The game does a terrific job of capturing the series' zany humor. Scooby and Shaggy still think with their stomachs, characters are frequently seen running in place as if the soles of their shoes have been greased, and all the silly jokes are punctuated with a laugh track. Many fans will be glad to know that Scooby's feisty nephew, Scrappy, is nowhere to be seen. Who needs P-p-puppy power, anyway?

The actual game play in Scooby Doo!: Night of 100 Frights consists of exploring the various locations searching for clues and power-ups while solving an endless array of puzzles.

You will jump, swing, and climb your way across the levels using Scooby's athletic skills. He is one resourceful Great Dane, so don't be afraid to hop on conveyor belts, swinging platforms and life-preservers to reach the goal. The puzzles are sometimes obscure, but they will make more sense if you watch the cartoon series.

Naturally the zany roster of power-ups includes Scooby Snacks and sandwiches, but there are also some special inventions that you will use to unravel the mystery. These inventions give Scooby special abilities and are essential to progressing though the game.

Graphics

The snazzy intro to Scooby-Doo!: Night of 100 Frights is a polygonal recreation of the classic opening montage from the series. During the intro and throughout the game, the characters are nicely animated and the sound is spot-on.

The creepy locations are littered with screeching bats, portraits that watch you walk past, and torn curtains waving in the breeze. The details are impressive, but the fixed camera doesn't always give you the most helpful view of the action. Until you get the hang of judging distances, you may miss a few jumps.

Scooby Doo!: Night of 100 Frights is great for Scooby Doo! fans young and old. It doesn't bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay but it could be the most faithful reproduction of the cartoon series so far.

This sans-Scrappy adventure is available in stores now. Zoinks! Scooby Doo!: Night of 100 Frights has been rated "E" (Everyone) by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
